Project Description
Thanks to a generous grant from Kohl’s, Susan G. Komen Wisconsin can continue their breast health program Conversations with Komen Presented by Kohl’s. Komen Wisconsin identified eight target zip codes that have disparities in breast cancer mortality. With this new focus they’ve selected COA’s Gill Family Resource Center inside our Goldin Center as the site of its new satellite breast cancer screening awareness office! COA is thrilled to be working with Susan G. Komen and Kohl’s to offer women in the community with this incredible resource.
Through this exciting new partnership, women can now access the “Komen Corner” to get important information about breast cancer risks and receive screening referrals. The Komen Corner is a satellite community hub where women can receive breast health education by participating in the Conversations with Komen program. Conversations with Komen is a program ran by Susan G. Komen Wisconsin in partnership with Kohl’s. The program works to increase screening rates by educating women on the importance of breast health and connecting them to resources that can help cover the cost of exams and treatment.
The overall goal is to encourage women in the community to be proactive about their health.
According to Program Manager Dana Smith, staff are also working to integrate programming geared toward promoting healthy lifestyle choices, like dance and wellness workshops. The overall goal is to encourage women in the community to be proactive about their health.
Dana Smith is looking forward to seeing the fruits of the Komen Corner’s labor: “I am very excited that COA has opened their doors for this partnership. I know that with continued work with all of COA’s partner organizations we will have a great impact on organizing the community so they are equipped with knowledge of the resources surrounding them and are adamant about taking care of their breast health.”
COA’s Komen Corner is located in the Gill Family Resource Center at COA’s Goldin Center (2320 W Burleigh St). The Komen Corner is open every Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 5pm. Staff are on site each of these days to help navigate women to resources and enroll them in the Conversations with Komen program.
