Project Description

On Friday, May 17th COA welcomed approximately 60 youth from six COA sites for COA’s 2nd annual Kohl’s Explore Your Future STEM Fair at the Goldin Center. In order to prepare for the STEM Fair, youth worked hard for two months to complete group STEM projects. These projects were displayed around COA’s Goldin Center gym for community judges to review. Projects covered fun STEM topics, like using gummy bears to study osmosis.

The winning projects were an assortment of creative scientific experiments from four age groups. First place winning projects included an egg drop, testing bubble gum and engineering paper planes. Second place winners experimented with dissolving skittles, compared tap and bottled water, combined soda and Mentos, and tested food using vision and smell. Third place winners melted ice using different substances, compared paper versus plastic bags, and more. The top three scoring groups per age group each received a medal and a gift card. Two 4th grade students from COA’s Westside Academy Community Learning Center (CLC) took home the grand prize.

“This helped them bridge the gap between science and their daily life, and sparked their creativity outside of the classroom.”

Students had a blast at the STEM Fair combining scientific experiments with everyday food and household items. This helped them bridge the gap between science and their daily life, and sparked their creativity outside of the classroom.

Through a partnership with Kohl’s Cares, COA implements the Kohl’s Explore Your Future program, ensuring Milwaukee’s youth have the knowledge and tools needed to succeed and thrive in today’s workforce. The Kohl’s Explore Your Future program introduces vital Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programming to youth ages 6-18 at COA’s two centers and eight after-school programs at MPS schools.
